Town of Atoka Roundabout
Atoka, Tennessee
The Town of Atoka, a rural community 30 miles northeast of Memphis, recently completed the conversion of a three-way stop intersection into a single lane roundabout. The new intersection, at the headway of Rosemark Road and Atoka-Idaville Road (SR-206), is the first of its kind for Tipton County. The previous intersection was often congested with traffic backing up in all three directions causing long commute delays. Located in a residential area and near Atoka Elementary School, the intersection was a source of frustration for the community.
The Town of Atoka, in partnership with the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT), decided to install a roundabout at the intersection to increase efficiency and provide a safer commute for motorists and pedestrians alike. Once designed and approved, the Town engaged SSR to provide construction engineering inspection services, including EPSC inspection. Included in our scope of work was community outreach to local businesses, residents, and churches in the area to inform them of the project goals and the construction impact. The project was completed ahead of the 90-day construction target and, since opening, the congestion issues have been alleviated and the community is pleased with the new roundabout.
