Constructed in the old Charlestown Navy Yard, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Charlestown, MA, makes a bold statement when it comes to rehabilitation. The new, 132-bed, state-of-the art facility, encompasses an environment that promotes healing and patient wellness – taking it to a whole new level.  As one of the largest inpatient rehab facilities in the U.S., the LEED Gold^® certified facility consistently ranks in the U.S. and World hospitals.

Partners Healthcare has always been committed to rehabilitation — not just about strengthening someone physically but rehabbing their spirit. They realized if they were going to be leaders in rehabilitation they needed a new facility, and had the opportunity to build on a historic site. Their focus was on creating a space that would provide opportunities for rehabilitation in every aspect of the building, including incorporating cutting edge technology systems.

The owner was looking for a partner to help with their ideas of innovative technology design. The project required specialized needs because of the varied patient population that would be treated at the facility. Everyone involved in the project was focused on patient care, thinking outside of the box to meet every type of patients’ needs.

SSR worked closely with the architect and facility staff listening to stories about how they anticipated the technology would work or be used; exploring how the technology systems would be used by the patients in a positive way.

Every aspect of technology design had to be considered. Certain rooms have “sip and puff devices” where patients blow into a device to alert the nurse call system because they don’t have the ability to push a button. Wi-fi was set up outside of the building infrastructure to provide capabilities for presentation or events in an outer court-yard; there is beautiful digital signage throughout the hospital which shares success stories of patients.

Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital was designed and tailored for their patient population. The end result has been a success story for SSR and all the parties involved.
