I-65 & Buckner Road Interchange
Spring Hill, Tennessee
The Greater Nashville area continues to grow at a rapid pace. Spring Hill in Williamson County is in the heart of the area’s expansion, and this growth is driving the need for increased capacity for our transportation system. The construction of a new interchange for Buckner Road on I-65 provided a more efficient route and safer access for the residents, businesses, and industry in this area through the use of a diverging diamond interchange (DDI). The unique crisscross design of a DDI allows two directions of traffic to temporarily cross to opposite sides of the roadway in order to travel across the overpass, and then cross back and resume the original travel pattern. SSR provided construction engineering and inspection for this alternative delivery project that was constructed using the TDOT design-build process.
The Buckner Road Interchange design-build contract consisted of three separate projects. The west leg of Buckner
Road was constructed with Local Interstate Connector funds as part of the STP-M-9400(67) (LIC No. 1) project. The diverging diamond bridge and ramps to I-65 were completed under the NH-I-65-2(113) Interchange project. Project STP-M-9400(68) (LIC No. 2) is another Local Interstate Connector project that connected the interchange to Lewisburg Pike to the east. Meanwhile, the City of Spring Hill is undertaking two separate projects to widen Buckner Lane which must be coordinated with this project.
