We have been invested in Memphis, TN, both professionally and personally, since the 1980’s. Our people live, work, and are active in the community. Our work is personal, and we take additional pride in supporting projects that improve the daily lives of our neighbors. Lamar Avenue is a major thoroughfare in southeast Memphis that experiences heavy commuter and truck traffic due to its proximity to Memphis International Airport and one of the largest intermodal freight yards in the southeast. We were the prime consultant direct to TDOT in this major improvement project to improve safety along the route.

The project was a component of a three-part effort to enhance the corridor through grading, drainage, paving, and construction of a concrete bulb-tee beam bridge and retaining walls on Lamar Avenue (State Route 4 / US-78). A priority of the work was to move traffic more efficiently on Holmes Road with the construction of a bridge for a grade separated interchange with Lamar Avenue. The work was unique as it was the first TDOT-led project to include utilities as well as the use of a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) which required all aspects of the job to have a recorded location and electronically captures materials testing data.

Phase one of the project started right at the Tennessee-Mississippi state border. The route is a direct commute for residents of the suburban neighborhoods along the border of Mississippi to travel into the city of Memphis. The route is also near the largest freight railyard in the area, with active railroad use. These conditions required special knowledge and attention to utility coordination, project phasing, and collaboration with the railroad.

Our team provided project oversight, with specialized staff to manage utility coordination and schedule reviews.
