Doubling Down on A New Gaming Hall
In early September, the Mint Gaming Hall at Kentucky Downs, a 25,000 SF addition, opened to much fanfare. The premier gaming destination features 850 slot machines, a high stakes area, sophisticated central bar, and entertainment stage. SSR provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and technology design services for the project.
Designing the mechanical system for a casino where smoking is still allowed necessitates a different approach to ensure patron comfort. Our team wanted to mitigate the lingering smell as much as possible. To do this, we looked at different approaches to smoke evacuation and worked with the Kentucky Downs operations staff to identify the best approach for their facility. Ultimately, the team decided to increase the amount of outside air coming into the facility and have the space cycle the room more frequently than would normally occur in a space this size.
With the addition, Kentucky Downs is looking to provide an elevated gaming experience for their patrons. To accomplish this, the space features high-end fixtures including a complex lighting system. Designed in partnership with the architect, SSR’s team incorporated specialty lighting throughout the space to enhance patron comfort and overall experience. Some of these examples include undercounter LED lights, up lighting, flexibility in lighting controls, and the use of lighting to differentiate the space function.
After opening the Mint Gaming Hall, Kentucky Downs will begin a phased renovation of the original space, converting portions of the gaming floor into restaurants and other amenities for patrons. SSR provided design services for this phased work that will begin construction in late 2020.
