Commissioning Lighting Control Systems
Requirements for lighting controls become more complex with each edition of the energy-conservation codes. Codes and standards include ASHRAE Standard 90.1: Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), and California Title 24. With each level of increased complexity, the benefits of formally commissioning lighting control systems increase. Tom Divine, PE, LEED AP (Electrical Engineer) and Jesse Felter (Electrical Commissioning Agent) recently wrote an article for Consulting-Specifying Engineer magazine in which they explore these requirements. The article illustrates the steps for commissioning a lighting system; summarizes the codes and standards that apply to lighting systems, controls, and commissioning; and explains the use of lighting controls to gain efficiency in lighting design.
