Engineers…Quietly Making a Difference
By David Bradford, Memphis Business Journal
They are the little-known heroes. When buildings are christened, bridges are celebrated and intersections are made more efficient, these men and women are content to sit quietly on the sidelines and savor the accomplishment of a job well done. They are engineers and their hands touch every part of our lives. This week, we celebrate Engineers’ Week — a time to recognize how the work of engineers makes our lives easier, healthier, safer and more enjoyable.
From the electricity that powers your home to the water that washes your clothing, engineers are somewhere making it all happen. Consider the entertainment you enjoy, whether it’s television, radio or the Internet — somewhere an engineer is calculating, adjusting and monitoring the outgoing signal to ensure it’s the best it can be. When you sit down to enjoy dinner this evening, know that somewhere agricultural engineers are working to ensure that your food meets high standards. When you pick up your cell phone to make a call, know that an engineer is working to ensure that your call connects successfully. When you sync that same phone to the Bluetooth system in your car, you guessed it, an engineer made that happen, too. As you drive your car down the street, take a moment to appreciate how civil engineers have designed our highways and bridges. And if you’ve ever been in an accident, you know how important the engineering behind vehicle safety can be.
