When the San Diego State University (SDSU) Aztec’s kick-off their 2022 season, they’ll be doing so in a brand new, state-of-the-art facility. The 35,000-seat stadium will be the first completed component of the redevelopment of the old Qualcomm Stadium, the former 135-acre home of the San Diego Chargers.

Bashor Field at Aztec Stadium

Located on the northwest corner of the site, Bashor Field at Aztec Stadium will be an entirely new home for the SDSU football program. While there are existing utilities on site, all the existing buildings and resources are being demolished to make way for new. SSR is assisting the project team as the electrical engineer of record in the design of electrical power distribution systems to the stadium. Located in “Sunny San Diego,” SDSU is taking advantage of the sun by building solar canopies over adjacent parking lots to aid in providing power to the stadium. The added benefit of solar power has allowed Aztec Stadium to seek LEED Gold certification.

Once complete, the stadium will offer a premium fan experience with local flair. Inside, concession stands along the main concourse will be fit out in re-purposed shipping containers. Luxury seating options will be available, along with high end amenities. The design team has been incorporating best practices and lessons learned from COVID-19 and installing modifications – such as touchless sensors – throughout the stadium. Adjacent to the venue will be a 35-acre park with ample gathering space for pre-game festivities.

SDSU Mission Valley

Bashor Field at Aztec Stadium is one piece of a much larger masterplan development for the site. Over time, the remaining space will be used for a campus expansion at SDSU Mission Valley. The expansion will accommodate 15,000 students with residential facilities, recreation fields, hotels, and some education buildings. Over 51 acres of park and open space is also accounted for. Ensuring connection to the existing Mission Valley campus, the masterplan includes an extension of the SDSU transportation system with a direct route to the main campus.

Once completed, the SDSU Mission Valley campus will be a vibrant, mixed-use campus that is transit-oriented, and expands the university’s educational, research, entrepreneurial, and technology transfer programs.
