Kia Center

Orlando, Florida

Kia Center (formerly Amway Center) is an 875,000 SF sports and entertainment facility that is home to the Orlando Magic of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The arena seats 18,846 fans for NBA games and up to 20,000 spectators for other events. The arena has 72 suites, 68 loge boxes, and 1,428 club seats. The Kia Center hosted the 2012 NBA All-Star game.

In addition to the Magic, the arena is also home to the Orlando Predators of the Arena Football League, the Solar Bears of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL), and numerous concerts and family events. The arena was constructed on an urban site, bordered by commercial and residential concerns and interstate I-4 on the east side.

From the beginning, the design team focused on creating a sustainable facility that used water efficiently, optimized energy usage and atmosphere protection, conserved construction materials and resources, included monitoring equipment for indoor environmental quality and health, and selected environmentally preferred modes of operation and maintenance. The Kia Center uses 20% less energy and 40% less water than other similarly sized arenas. These elements combine to make the Kia Center one of the most environmentally friendly, high-performing professional arenas in the country. The Kia Center was the first NBA facility to earn Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design new construction certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. The project was certified as LEED Gold®.

The facility’s design also includes a desiccant system for de-humidification required by the local environment to be able to host hockey and ice events year round. The project utilized the Design/Bid/Build method for design and construction, with SSR performing mechanical and electrical services.  Plumbing and fire protection services were provided by our local DBE partner, John J. Christie.
