Screw Centrifugal Pumps & YP Perspective
Smith Seckman Reid’s Civil and Environmental engineers recently had two articles published in the 2015 edition of Water Professionals Connector, the annual joint publication from the Kentucky/Tennessee Section of AWWA and Kentucky-Tennessee Water Environment Association.
Mike Bernard, PE, Joe Griffey, PE, and Lindsay Bryant, PE, from SSR, along with John Strickland and Darren Gore of the Murfreesboro Water and Sewer Department (MWSD) wrote “Screw Centrifugal Pumps at the Sinking Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant” (page 49). Due to a seized sluice gate and the resulting build-up that continuously plugged one of the pumps, MWSD turned to SSR for solutions on how to improve the operation of the pump. After various unsuccessful attempts of improving pump operation, SSR proposed replacing the continuously clogged pump with a new style of pump, one that utilizes a screw centrifugal technology to more efficiently handle the removal of solids built up. Since 2009, MWSD has converted all their pumps to this new technology, which has increased pumping capacity of the main lift station by 25%, reduced energy and maintenance expenses, and provided better adaptability to flow fluctuation.
