Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital receives Award of Excellence; Owensboro Health Regional Hospital takes home Honorable Mention
Smith Seckman Reid, Inc. (SSR) a leader among engineering firms in designing, consulting, and commissioning projects is proud to announce that two of its projects have been recognized by Modern Healthcare’s 2014 Design Awards, a program that recognizes excellence in the design and planning of new and remodeled healthcare facilities. Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital received the Award of Excellence and Owensboro Health Regional Hospital received an Honorable Mention.
“It’s such an honor when our projects are recognized, especially by a publication such as Modern Healthcare,” said Clay Seckman, Senior Principal with SSR. “It’s great to see positive feedback for the hard work and dedication that these owners and their project teams put into each project. Both Spaulding and Owensboro are impactful projects to their respective communities, and SSR is proud to have been involved with each.”
Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, located in Boston, MA, is at the forefront of research in advances in rehabilitative care. The Partners HealthCare hospital serves as the official teaching hospital for the Harvard Medical School Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Having opened in April 2013, the 132-bed, LEED Gold® certified facility played a major role in treating survivors of the Boston Marathon bombing.
“As a renowned industry leader in rehabilitative medicine, Spaulding was highly intentional about creating a patient-centered environment for people with all levels of rehabilitative needs, said Julia Doolittle Whitacre, Project Manager with SSR. “SSR worked with both the Spaulding & Partners Healthcare staff to design state of the art technology solutions that aligned with the project goals of improving patient care and using technology to augment the overall patient experience. From interior digital signage that beautifully tells the story of Spaulding and its many patient rehabilitation successes, to exterior wireless coverage allowing patients to make the most of Spaulding’s historic Charlestown campus, the technology solutions seamlessly integrate into Spaulding’s unique care delivery model that helps their patients find the strength needed to move forward. It is exciting to see all our hard work succeed with many accolades to the Spaulding & Partners Team. This project demonstrated a “Best Practice” approach that is a model for others to follow.”
SSR provided comprehensive technology planning and design services, from concept through construction to include all major low voltage systems, including voice, data and wireless infrastructure, nurse call, audio-visual, public address, digital signage/patient entertainment, and security.
Owensboro Health Regional Hospital in Owensboro, KY received an Honorable Mention, the second highest award. Competed in 2013 the 780,000 SF, 477 bed, replacement hospital is a modern, innovative facility, revolutionizing the quality of patient care.
“The ownership has integrated the community and provides state of the art technology while possessing a healthcare delivery system that creates an environmentally pleasing patient experience,” said Terry Compton, Senior Principal with SSR. “Owensboro is one of the leading healthcare providers in the state of Kentucky and surrounding area, SSR is proud to have been a part of the team.”
For the nine-story replacement hospital, SSR provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and technology design and low voltage consulting services. The project was designed utilizing the Integrated Project Delivery method.
